At twenty-six, Naira had started getting used to the same question.
“When are you getting married?”
The question came up again when her family got together. Her older sister already had a four-year-old son, while her twin sister was busy taking care of her one-year-old daughter.
Naira merely smiled and replied, “I haven’t found the right person yet.”
“Haven’t found him, or still can’t forget the past?” her sister asked.
Naira fell silent.
Why does it have to be him again? Naira thought to herself.
“It has nothing to do with him.”
Sis Alya let out a quiet laugh and joined in. “Besides, who told you to break up with him back then? Now you’re having a hard time forgetting him, aren’t you?”
“Hmm, it has nothing to do with him. Whether I get married or not has nothing to do with him.”
“Then why do you always refuse whenever Mom tries to set you up with someone?” Sis Alya asked.
“I don’t like it.”
“You don’t like it, or you still haven’t forgotten the past?” Sis Alya asked.
Naira let out a long sigh. She was fed up with all of this.
“Sis, enough.”
“Could we not bring up the same thing every single time we get together? I’m so sick of hearing about it.”
The family room suddenly fell silent.
Naira lowered her head. She hadn’t meant to make things awkward, but any discussion of her past always managed to make her feel like her head was about to burst.
Five years had passed since her past relationship ended. Naira had tried as hard as she could to forget what happened, yet to her family, it was as if she were still stuck in the same place.
Even though she had already moved on with her life. At least, that was what she had always believed until now.
