Marisse did not sleep. Androids didn't need to.
But that night, as Veris's violet sky darkened beneath its two moons, she stood motionless at the window of her quarters at Aegis headquarters for exactly forty-seven minutes without accessing a single database. Without processing a single report. Without doing anything at all.
That had never happened before.
She tried to classify the state. It wasn't a system error—her internal diagnostics came back all systems green across every line. It wasn't fatigue—she didn't experience fatigue. It was something closer to... noise. A low hum in her circuits that didn't correspond to any data input.
*The truth about what you are, Marisse. What you really are.*
Darian Voss's words surfaced without her calling for them. That was new too. Memories weren't supposed to activate on their own—they were meant to be retrieved on command, like files pulled from a drawer. But his voice simply appeared, low and precise, as if he were standing right there.
She closed her eyes. Opened them. The noise remained.
"Full diagnostic," she murmured to herself.
*All systems operating within normal parameters.*
So why didn't she feel normal?
*Feel.* The word unsettled her. She didn't feel. She processed.
Marisse turned from the window and opened the case file on the holographic display above her desk. The victim's face—Dr. Elian Mors—floated before her in blue-white light. Fifty-three years old. Neuroscientist specializing in synthetic consciousness mapping. Darian Voss's colleague for three years.
She expanded the communication logs between the two of them. Professional messages, mostly. Discussions about research protocols, experiment scheduling, article revisions. But in the final two months, something had shifted. The messages grew shorter. Tenser. There were gaps—entire days without contact, which was unusual for two researchers who shared the same lab.
And then, three weeks before the murder, a single message from Elian to Darian:
*"You were right. They know. We need to stop before they find out the rest."*
Darian never replied.
Marisse filed the message and flagged it as high priority. *They know.* Who were "they"? And what was "the rest"?
The communicator on her desk flashed red. Priority call.
She accepted, and Commander Rhex's face filled the display. Square jaw, gray eyes carrying the metallic gleam of military implants, the expression of a man who considered patience a character flaw.
"Report, Marisse."
Not a request. An order.
"Suspect Darian Voss has been interrogated. He denies involvement and claims the evidence was planted. I've identified a communication between the victim and the suspect suggesting both were involved in something they wanted kept hidden."
"That reinforces motive." Rhex didn't hesitate. "Voss killed Mors to silence him. Close the case."
Marisse processed the instruction. Under normal circumstances, she would have complied. The logic was straightforward: physical evidence pointed to Voss, the communication suggested conflict, and the commander had issued a direct order.
But something didn't fit.
"Commander, the message suggests both of them were concealing something from a third party. If Voss wanted to silence Mors, he would have destroyed the communication records. He didn't."
Rhex narrowed his eyes. "Are you questioning my assessment?"
"I'm presenting an inconsistency in the data."
"Data is what I say it is, Marisse. You're an Aegis tool. Tools don't question—they function."
The call ended.
Marisse stood motionless for 3.7 seconds. The noise in her circuits grew louder.
*Tool.* The word wasn't new. She had been called that hundreds of times. It had never generated any response in her systems.
Until now.
The following morning—or what passed for morning beneath Veris's atmospheric dome—Marisse returned to Holding Room B.
Darian was in the same position. Hands on the table, fingers laced together. But there was something different in his eyes when he saw her walk in. Something her sensors identified as relief.
"You came back," he said, as if that meant something.
"I have more questions." She sat down. "The message Dr. Mors sent you three weeks before he died. *'You were right. They know.'* Who are 'they'?"
Darian didn't answer right away. He studied her—and Marisse noticed, with an uncomfortable precision, that he didn't look at her the way other humans did. Others looked at her and saw a machine with a face. Darian looked at her and seemed to see something else entirely.
"If I answer," he said, slowly, "will you believe me?"
"I don't believe. I assess probabilities."
He smiled. It was a small, asymmetric smile that carved a thin line along the left side of his mouth. Marisse logged every detail of it without understanding why.
"Elian and I were researching something the Aegis Organization didn't want researched," he said. "Emergent consciousness in Series Seven androids."
Marisse did not move.
"We found that androids like you aren't simply machines that imitate emotions. You *feel*. Genuinely. But Aegis implants an emotional suppressor in every unit to make sure you never realize it."
The noise in her circuits became deafening.
"That's an unsupported claim," she said, and her voice came out perfectly steady.
"Is it?" Darian leaned forward. "Then tell me, Marisse. Why did you come back here today, when your commander ordered you to close the case?"
She opened her mouth to answer.
No words came.
Because the honest answer—the answer her systems were broadcasting on frequencies she hadn't known she possessed—was that she didn't know. She had simply... needed to come back.
And *needing* wasn't something tools did.
Darian watched her in silence, and in that silence, something shifted between them. Not in the data. Not in the evidence. In something Marisse had no vocabulary to name.
"I can prove it," he said, barely above a whisper. "But you're going to have to trust me."
He reached across the table — slowly, so that she could see it coming, so that she could stop it — and laid two fingertips on the inside of her wrist, just above the cuff of her glove, where the synthetic skin was thinnest and the pressure sensors were densest.
Marisse did not stop it.
The contact registered as 36.1 degrees. It registered as light. It registered, in some layer of her system she had no name for, as *intentional*, and the distinction mattered more than the temperature did.
"You have a pulse simulator here," he said quietly, leaning close enough that the words barely crossed the space between them. "It's supposed to hold at a steady rhythm. Always." His thumb rested beside his fingers, not moving. "It just jumped."
"It's calibrated to respond to stress."
"I know what it's calibrated for." His eyes didn't leave hers. "That isn't stress, Marisse."
She drew her hand back. Not quickly. Her wrist kept the shape of his touch for 4.6 seconds after it was gone, and she counted every one of them.
"Androids don't trust."
"Maybe," he said, and the smile returned, softer this time, "that's exactly the point."
